Last night I cleaned up the patio, got rid of the dead plants, and planted new plants. I then did a little rearranging of the pots.

I made up a new word today. Every time I make a candle holder out of a garden pot I’m going to call it a pottlelabra.
Here’s three I made this week. I painted the pots purple (of course), lined them with tin foil, filled them with aquarium gravel, and added a tea light. These could actually hold votives.

Soon I will have to secure the pots to the railing because there’s not much room left to walk back there. It’s become a spider-only patio.

Some things are blooming that I didn’t know would bloom.

Other things are just going crazy.

Then here’s the butterfly bush in the new blue pot. The blooms have faded though. The daisy is in the biggest pot. I have to get the two middle pots apart so I can plant the lavender and the remaining dianthus. My friend told me a trick to get them apart, so tomorrow I’m going to try it.

I had bought some plants weeks ago and didn’t have the time to pot them. Now that I have been laid off and have plenty of time, I spent a few hours tonight planting a few things. It really helped alleviate some of the depression. I ran out of potting mix, so tomorrow I will get some more and finish potting.
Afterwards I spent several hours outside reading. It was cool and pleasant, and I had a few candles burning. I think I will spend every evening out there until I go to Vegas.

I checked today, and there is one little baby tomato on the plant. I hope it grows up to be a big red juicy tomato! And I hope it has brothers and sisters!

I slept through the storm of the century last night. It hit at about 4am. There was a puddle of water in my downstairs bedroom, but I have wood floors, so I just soaked it up with a towel. The power was out, so I had to get dressed by candle light. I saw downed trees and twisted signs on my way to work. My commute was great for once. I guess a lot of people stayed home.
My co-worker spent the night in her bathroom with her two dogs. She could feel the building move. When she emerged, all the car ports in her apartment complex were mangled. Luckily, her car escaped damage. She was pretty shaken up though.
It turned out to be a beautiful day today. Sunny and mild, but a bit windy. My commute home was horrible. I had even left the office late, and traffic was still slow. When I got home the power was on. I checked my ice cream and it hadn’t melted! Priorities you know.
Here’s some links to some pictures other people have taken.

I invited my in-laws over for dinner and we ate on the patio. I bought 3 lantern tea lights and hung them from the fence. I also bought over the door hangers for the hanging baskets. Also in this photo you can see the toss pillows and the tray I bought yesterday. I spent $88 at Garden Ridge on things for the patio. I got a set of 5 nesting pots for half off. So of course I had to get more plants. I didn’t have time to plant them before the party, so I will take pics later. As you can see I need one more hanging basket.

I think the oxalis likes it’s location on the front porch. It was blooming like crazy today. The tomato plant also has blooms. Let’s pray for tomatoes! I saw a wasp or bee fly by, so I hope there was some pollination going on.

It’s a lovely Saturday. Perfect weather. 74 degrees, sunny, a breeze. I wish it would stay that way forever. My patio is a lovely urban oasis. My front porch is blazing hot with the full western sun. Last night I got some more potting soil and mulch, so I’ve spent the afternoon planting my remaining plants and three more new ones. I let the cats out to enjoy themselves as well. Lula went straight to the cyclamen and started munching on the petals. Picchu discovered that she can slip under the fence surrounding the patio, so I ended up chasing them all back inside. Now that I am done and relaxing, I have let Tucker back out. One of these days, I will fix the kitty fence so they can be let out on part of the patio.
My mom is sending me some birthday money, so I may get a fire pit. I want one really badly. My neighbors have one and I’m jealous. I also want to get a screen door for the sliding door. The management doesn’t provide them, which is idiotic. And I want to get shoji screens to go in front of the sliding door for privacy. That way I can leave the hideous vertical blinds open.
The new plants I got are Georgia Blue creeping speedwell (veronica peduncularis). The are so adorable and whimsical. I looked for tall grasses but couldn’t find anything at Home Depot. I still have these two planters left to fill. I will try another nursery.
These are the plants I have:
Purple Queen Reina Morada
Citronella

Labrador Violet

Dianthus
Lavander

Dusty Miller
Cyclamen
Rosemary

Lamb’s Ear
Greek Oregano
Basil
Snapdragons
Pansies
Mint

unknown plant

Purple Oxalis
Tomato
And of course, as soon as I can find it, I must have torenia. I want to get a couple of new big pots and fill them with my favorite flower.
